A Purpose-Built Facility To Support Growing Community Needs

The client required a new development for a new medical centre in a growing area. A site was sourced which used to be the location for a truck wash; subsequently, the site was subject to flooding and as a result, the soil quality was poor.

The Challenge

The existing practice was no longer able to accommodate the growing number of patients or services. The team needed a larger facility in a central location with easy access and room for future growth.

After reviewing several sites in the Mittagong town centre, the chosen location offered high visibility and good traffic access but came with some design constraints. The new building would need to manage vehicle flow and patient access while meeting strict compliance and performance standards.

The brief also included a strong focus on sustainability. The goal was to reduce long-term energy use, work with local suppliers, and exceed minimum building code requirements.

The Solution

JMH Living Design created a purpose-built healthcare facility that feels calm, practical, and professional. The layout includes a mix of consulting rooms, treatment areas, psychology spaces, a chemist, optometry and hearing services, radiology, and physiotherapy rooms. Public and staff areas are clearly defined but visually connected to make the centre easy to navigate.

The design prioritised natural light, clear wayfinding, and a sense of openness. Waiting areas are bright and quiet. Room sizes and access points were designed to support a variety of practitioners and future flexibility.

Locally sourced materials and sustainable design principles were used throughout the build:

  • Locally produced bricks and steel frame systems
  • Double-glazed windows and doors
  • Photovoltaic panels installed on the roof
  • Reuse of materials from a previous building on the site
  • Construction that exceeds Section J energy performance standards

The site layout was designed to support efficient car movement, patient drop-off, and clear pedestrian access. Landscaping around the site softens the building’s presence and connects it to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The Result

The new centre delivers a strong, accessible foundation for healthcare in Mittagong. It brings together a wide range of services in a welcoming, future-ready environment. Patients now benefit from easier access to a variety of care options in one place, while staff enjoy a professional and comfortable working environment.

The building’s performance features are already contributing to lower running costs and improved indoor comfort. Its clear layout and calm design help reduce stress for patients and staff alike.

Key Takeaways

  • A well-designed healthcare facility can improve patient experience, support staff, and future-proof growing practices.
  • Sustainable design choices often have long-term financial and operational benefits.
  • Site selection, traffic planning, and layout are just as important as the building itself when it comes to delivering great outcomes.
