The Challenge
The existing entry had become crowded and inefficient as visitor numbers increased. Low ceilings, limited natural light, and fragmented staff workspaces created an environment that felt dark and uninviting. Navigation through the building was not always clear, particularly during busy periods such as school carnivals, swimming programs, and community events.
Sutherland Shire Council and Leisure Centre staff wanted a design that would improve the arrival experience, support day-to-day operations, and better connect the facility to the outdoor environment. The project also needed to accommodate high volumes of foot traffic while remaining durable and easy to maintain.
The Solution
JMH Living Design reimagined the entry foyer and reception area to create a more open, welcoming, and intuitive space. A large feature wall incorporating swimming imagery became a focal point within the foyer, immediately establishing the centre’s identity while helping guide visitors towards the reception desk.
The reception counter was redesigned to support multiple staff stations and improve efficiency during peak periods. Durable commercial finishes were selected throughout, including hard-wearing flooring and easy-maintenance surfaces suited to a busy public facility. A clean palette of white and blue tones reinforced the aquatic theme while creating a bright and contemporary environment.
Additional glazing introduced natural light into the space, improving the sense of openness and strengthening the connection to surrounding landscaped areas. Clear circulation paths were established to separate arrivals, departures, and queueing zones, making the facility easier to navigate for visitors of all ages.
The Result
The transformed entry has become a welcoming front door for the centre. Visitors are greeted by a bright, modern space that is easy to navigate, while staff benefit from improved functionality and visibility across reception areas.
The redesign successfully balances aesthetics with practicality. The space performs efficiently during busy periods, supports daily operations, and creates a stronger sense of arrival for the community. The project was recognised by the Building Designers Association of Australia with awards for both Commercial Alterations & Additions and Non-Residential Interiors.
